Welcome to The Original Hot Yoga

This practice was introduced to the West in 1965. The same poses are taught in each class so every class is appropriate for beginners. Every session is open to new students and you may drop in to any class. Each class has students of varying levels of experience and proficiency.
Come to class with a sense of humor and self compassion. For many, it takes a while to feel fully competent in the poses. Just know that everyone there remembers what it was like to be new to Original Hot Yoga.

This class is a demanding series of 26 specific postures (asanas), practiced in an exact sequence, and 2 breathing exercises (pranayamas), which are suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture. Original Hot Yoga also stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 percent of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order. This scientifically designed, 90 minute program delivers total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness, injury and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the series of postures combines skills of concentration, patience, determination and self-control, which leads to increased mental clarity and reduced stress. Original Hot Yoga is practiced in a heated room (105 Degrees at 50-60% humidity) to warm your muscles, prevent injury, allow a deeper workout, and cleanse the body by flushing toxins.

Why The Heat?

Yoga changes the construction of the body from the inside out, from bones to skin and from fingertips to toes. So before you change it, you have to heat it up to soften it, because a warm body is a flexible body. Then you can reshape the body any way you want.

Hatha Yoga flushes away the waste products, the toxins of all the glands and organs of your body. It provides a natural irrigation of the body through the circulatory system, with the help of the respiratory system. It brings nourishment to every cell of your body so that each one can perform its function and keep your body healthy. "You may be wondering what is meant when is it said this yoga can "cure" people. In reality, there is no such thing as a cure. Doctors say they have cured a patient when they have removed the symptoms of a particular problem. But if you are cured of the flu on Monday, no one in the world can guarantee that on Friday you won't get the flu again. And so when it is mentioned in the book “Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class” about curing chronic diseases such as arthritis or slipped disc, it is saying that if you faithfully follow the directions, you will be relieved of your symptoms of discomfort. That is the only "cure" anyone can offer.

However, the book offers two guarantees with the cure.

  • Guarantee one: If you continue the Beginning Yoga Class regularly (all twenty-six poses exactly as directed) then the chronic symptoms will not return.
  • Guarantee two: If you don't continue your yoga practice faithfully, fully, or as directed, then your symptoms will return.

It is for this reason that the Benefits of each separate exercise are not given any great emphasis in the body of the book. The book is not intended to tempt readers to laziness or half measures. Growth and progression is an individual standard

To be 'perfect' in Yoga is to do the best you can do. There is no standard of comparison except you, for instance, how:

  • supple your muscles and joints have become compared to when you began

Few of us ever do the poses "perfectly." The reality is that our state of mind and condition of the body create challenges to do the pose.
